Every year, more than 100 million tons of textiles are produced in the world, including an unlikely 20 garments per inhabitant of the planet. 150 billion pieces of clothing are produced every year, and almost all of them end up in landfills or are burned. As a result of ‘fast fashion’, the fashion industry now accounts for 10% of the world’s total carbon emissions – only the oil industry has a larger footprint.
Renewcell offers a solution to this challenge. The raw material is old discarded garments and other textiles, and the end product is Circulose – a material that becomes new garments made of viscose or lyocell. The patented process is one of the first in the world to recycle textiles on a commercial scale. The end customer is the global fashion giants who want to offer sustainable fashion, but the actual customers are the textile producers who supply, for example, H&M, MANGO and Zara.
