Mathias Sundin

Ånge has turned the tables and set its sights on becoming a driving force in the green transition. Located between Sundsvall and Östersund, in a municipality with 9,100 inhabitants, investments of up to 50 billion are planned over the next 5–8 years. The focus is on hydrogen, green industrial symbiosis and creating long-term local benefits and optimism for the future.

One of the key figures behind this journey is Mathias Sundin, Deputy Head of Community Development since spring 2024, with responsibility for both business and community planning. Under his leadership, Ånge is reorganising to become the cohesive ‘glue’ – an enabler that accelerates establishments, speeds up permit processes and paves the way for the municipality’s goal of 2,000 new residents.

Ånge has brought together the business community in a joint hydrogen association as a platform for collaboration. The association’s members have recently taken a decisive step towards forming a Hydrogen Valley by securing long-term EU funding – proof that bold decisions and local partnerships can have a major impact.

Mathias brings with him over two decades of development work in Västernorrland: from Ung Företagsamhet (Young Entrepreneurship) and innovation-driven initiatives in the late 1990s to regional and national projects in sustainable development, the labour market, broadband, public transport and infrastructure. Alongside his work, he has led one of Jämtland’s largest communities, a practical school in dealing with rapid exploitation in a mountain environment. He is now using that experience to guide Ånge through its rapid expansion.
